Jules Brown reads an extract from Not Cool: Europe by Train in a Heatwave
My latest travel book is a hot and steamy adventure (no, not that kind) by rail across Europe - 9 cities, 9 countries, 9 days, 1 ridiculously hot summer, what could possibly go wrong? Find out how my journey starts, as I read the first part of the chapter on Berlin from my book, Not Cool: Europe by Train in a Heatwave.

Titanic Belfast - Where the Story Began
Переглядів 1924 роки тому
The RMS Titanic - designated RMS for 'Royal Mail Ship' - was one of the biggest ships ever built. It sank in the freezing North Atlantic on its maiden voyage in 1912, after hitting an iceberg, and it went down quickly - within three hours of the collision. The ship only carried enough lifeboats for about half the number of people on board and over 1,500 people drowned, with another 700 eventual...
The Ruined City of Stari Bar, Montenegro
Переглядів 4234 роки тому
The ruined city of Stari Bar ('Old Bar') in Montenegro is a tumbledown place of shattered houses, overgrown streets, damaged buildings and crumbling walls. Battered by 19th-century bombardment, and hit by an earthquake in 1979, the city was abandoned by its inhabitants and left to rot. But now there's life again as an increasing number of visitors make their way into the hills to see this remar...
Hiking in Montenegro - Mount Jezerski and the Best View in Europe

The hike up Mount Jezerski in Lovcen National Park in southern Montenegro is a real beauty - with some of the most stunning views in Europe from the viewing platform at the top. Best hike in Europe? It's certainly in my Top 10, and at a 3-hour round trip, it's one of the easiest you'll make for one of the most amazing views around. Walk with me all the way as I set off from the trailhead and cl...
Bernina Express, Chur to Tirano - Europe's best train ride
Переглядів 18 тис.5 років тому
Routinely touted as 'Europe's best train ride', the Bernina Express from Chur in Switzerland to Tirano in Italy runs on the Alps' highest-altitude railway line. It's an absolutely amazing journey. I've filmed the southbound route, which you can start in Zurich and end in Milan - a 9-hour trip in total, with the Bernina Express taking up the middle (144-km, 4hr 30min) section. Just change at Chu...

Forever Young - 158 Squadron Memorial, Lissett, East Yorkshire
Переглядів 5256 років тому
During World War II, the RAF station at Lissett in East Yorkshire was home to 158 Squadron, whose crews flew heavy bomber raids over Germany. They flew 250 missions, losing over 140 aircraft to enemy fire and accident, and 851 squadron airmen and women lost their lives - most of them young crewmen in their 20s. They are commemorated today at the old RAF base by an incredibly moving memorial in ...

You know that Woody Allen movie, 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'? The cool one with Penelope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson and Javier Bardem? Check out the wild Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge on Northern Ireland's Antrim coast! Salmon fishermen first built a rope bridge here in the 18th century, to help them net the fish. A bit of a late review considering I see this post is 3 years old but can I say how immensely enjoyable I found this book to be. Yes, I have a European train trip planned for next week and some countries feature in this but even if I hadn’t embarked on this adventure I feel I’ve been on it with you. (Except where claustrophobia means me having to go lay down in a cool dark, room after reading the sleeping arrangements on the Liechtenstein sleeper!) Thank you, THANK YOU 🙏🏻. I shall be seeking out your other works to read as I travel.

      Going south, the way this video is shot, the best views are by sitting on the right hand side - I had one of the 2 seaters. If you're coming north, from Milan, then it's the lefthand side.

    I have a serious question. How did you do 25 KM in only 3 hours?? We want to do this hike and 3 hours is fine, but 3 hours does not equal 25 KM of hiking. I am very confused. Please advise

    • @Julestoldme
      @Julestoldme 2 роки тому

      Hi John, no worries, I should have been a bit clearer in the vid - it's 12k roughly each way, so it takes 3 hours to reach Cain (which I describe confusingly as 'the end of the walk') and then you turn round and come back the same way, another 3 hours or so. It's fairly easy going, mostly a flat, level route, so you can do 12k in 3 hours, though it could be longer of course, depending on how often you stop/quick you walk. It's basically a full day out from Poncebos - the details are in the vid description above. Hope you have a great day's hiking!

    Actually you are not permitted to ride on the pavements in Budapest if you are over 12 years old. Fines for doing so are handed out, mostly in the inner areas. I have lived in Budapest for many years and have twice been run down by cyclists not keeping to the cycle paths. There is no excuse as the city is compact and has over 200km of cycle routes.

    • @Julestoldme
      @Julestoldme 7 років тому

      Fair point Tim - my mistake. In my defence, I was really only following everyone else who seemed to be on the pavements at times. And the cycle lanes were excellent I have to say.

      +AMaeTV No one's too old for Treetop Trek - I think they said the oldest person they had had was in their 80s! Come to England and I'll show you around the Lake District, we can make a movie or two!

      The Hostel Girl It really is quite an adventure! And I've only ever been in the winter, which makes it more of a challenge still! But on a summer's night, this would be amazing, with fanrastic dark skies full of stars

      AMaeTV It really is - when it's sunny! (which is quite a lot, to be fair). And the walk all the way around is amazing - one of the best in the UK, really worth a try one day.
